Reserve champion leads Dungannon trade

Powerful Aberdeen-Angus bulls with good conformation and above average figures met a buoyant trade at the native breeds show and sale, held at Dungannon Farmers’ Mart today.

Prices peaked at 3800gns and five lots attracted bids of 3000gns and over. Auctioneer Trevor Wylie confirmed a 74% clearance with 14 bulls changing hands to level at £2614 each.

Sale leader was the reserve male champion Old Glenort Earthmover N065 from James Porter’s 70-cow herd at Upper Ballinderry, near Lisburn. Sired by stock bull Luddenmore Eclipse J067, he is out of the Netherton Fleur’s Legacy F390 daughter Old Glenort Black Bianca J201. A half brother to last year’s Balmoral Show champion, he is in the breed’s top 15% for eye muscle area +4.4, and top 30% for milk +11. Born in January 2013 this one joins a Clogher-based herd.

Next best at 3100gns was the 15-month-old supreme male champion Drumhill Jumbo Eric P086 bred by Jonathan and Lisa Doyle, who run a herd of 25 breeding females at Cookstown. Sired by Blelack Prince Consort A286, his dam is the Rawburn Lord Ross C216 daughter Rawburn Joyful Erica H772 – purchased privately as a maiden heifer. A full brother sold to a pedigree herd for an undisclosed five-figure sum.

Described by judge Nigel Heatrick, Glaslough, County Monaghan, as a well grown and very correct bull with excellent ring presence, the champion also boasts tremendous Breedplan figures. He is in the breed’s top 5% for milk +20, top 10% for eye muscle area +5.3 and terminal sire index +38, and top 15% for self replacing index +47. His daughter calving ease score of +1.5 ranks him in the top 30%. Buyer was Wilbert Hanna, Rasharkin, County Antrim.

Also selling at 3100gns was the third prize winning Sess Elim N061, a July 2013 born Friarstown Edition G028 son bred by Margaret Buchanan, Augher, County Tyrone. He is out of the Fordel Eisenhower Y423 daughter Sess Essie E633, carries a SRI of +35 and joins a County Down herd.

The fourth prize winning Dartrey Diageo N156 came under the hammer at 3000gns for Hylda Mills and AW Buller, Scarva. This two-year-old entry is sired by Logie Lustre F473 and is out of Wedderlie Duchesse E031. Buyer was Andrew Dobbs, Carrickfergus.

Also commanding a bid of 3000gns was the third prize winning Lana Ephraim P771, a 14-month-old entry brought out by the husband and wife team of Alan and Lana Cheney, who run 30 pedigree cows at Trillick, County Tyrone. Sired by the herd’s stock bull Blackhaugh Easy Papa G728, his dam is the Aynho Rossiter Eric B125 daughter Friarstown Elba J157. This one is in the breed’s top 10% for milk +16, top 15% for daughter calving ease +2.5 and self replacing index +48, and top 20% for terminal sire index. New owner is D J Hatrick, Creggan Farm, Londonderry.

Female champion was James Porter’s 25-month-old heifer Old Glenort Emer N437, who didn’t make her reserve in the sale ring. He also scooped the reserve female championship with the May 2013 born Old Glenort Elana N625. She sold for 1200gns to Sean Moore’s Millbrae herd at Derrynoose, Armagh. They were the first daughters to be offered for sale by the herd’s 16,000gns stock bull The Moss Quebec K027.
