Appleby, Cumbria-based Bryan and Carole Ronan of the Jerusalem herd has won the 2015 Walkers Show Herd of the Year trophy for most points awarded for exhibiting home bred stock at specific qualifying shows across the UK. They will receive a trophy and share of the £500 prize find, kindly sponsored by Walkers Shortbread.
Delighted with his win, Mr Ronan says this is the first time he has won the award having been runner up once, some years ago. His success on last year’s show circuit came predominantly with the yearling bull Jerusalem Lord Hansard P289, a Rawburn Julio Eric L249 son who was reserve male champion at the Great Yorkshire Show and placed in the top three in his class at the Highland Show as well.
Also included in the show team was Jerusalem Duchess P299, another Julio Eric daughter and Jerusalem Lady Jane N261, a Blelack Blackstock A227 daughter, who also stood champion and then overall interbreed champion at Westmorland Show, the first native beast to ever take the interbreed title.
Alongside their class wins and championships in the summer, Bryan and Carole celebrated a great run of form at the Winter National Show in Carlisle with a string of success for Julio Eric sired calves, culminating in the bull calf, overall calf and reserve male championship with Jerusalem Galileo R336.
The Jerusalem herd currently comprises of 35 breeding females and some of the winners in the 2015 team will likely form part of the 2016 show team.
Runners up in the Walkers Show Herd of the Year competition were Tom Rennie of the Mosston Muir herd, while in third place was the Glympton herd from Glympton Farms.
