Friday update: 23rd February 2018

In the last seven days we’ve been busy with lots of activity, including preparation for this weekend’s YDP Senior Conference in Ireland which is lined up to be a great event! Here is the weekly round-up of the last week:

YDP Senior Conference

Today our budding young farmers have been making their way to Dublin in preparation for the 2018 Senior Conference, an event designed to provide insight and information from all areas in the commercial beef production industry, preparing them for successful future careers. Sarah Haire from Dawn Meats has helped greatly in the organisation and was talking about the event, saying: ‘’The depth and breadth of information the participants will get over the course of the weekend will help them bring new ideas back to their own farms and give them the knowledge to shape discussions on the future of British agriculture.’’ To read more about what the participants will be getting up to, who’ll be speaking at the conference and more from Sarah, visit:

Donnie and Widhill dispersals

Last weekend saw the genuine dispersals of the Donnie and Widhill herds of Aberdeen-Angus, with both doing well under the hammer on the day. The top call of the day came from Felix McDaid’s Donnie Herd for Fenland My Prize, with this Senior Herd Sire who was Male Champion at the Royal Highland Show in 2016 finding favour and selling to 8,000gns to AW & KL Burn, Ellesmere, Shropshire. For the full report and information on all the averages from the sales, head over to the website at: As a Society, we’d like to send our very best wishes to all at Widhill and Donnie for their future endeavours, and thank them for their membership over the years.

The PENWAC Club will be holding their AGM at the Best Western Garstang Country Hotel and Golf Club on Sunday 4th March at 11am prompt. After the meeting, at 1pm, there will be a three-course beef lunch available for £16.50 followed by guest speakers Barrie Turner, Chief Executive and Angela McGregor, President of the Society. All are welcome to attend, with numbers required for the meal by the 1st of March. If you would like to attend, please get in touch with Mary Hamnett on 07817083995.

Enquiries – stock and work

We received a few enquiries this week for a selection of different things that the membership may have interest in and be able to help with. Firstly, Josje van Iterson is a 19 year old student from the Netherlands seeking a 6 week traineeship. For more information and how you might be able to help, visit: Also on the work front, there is a vacancy for an assistant stockperson in North Wales which may be of interest, which you can read more about at: Finally, there was an enquiry from Turkey for pedigree Aberdeen-Angus bulls with the overseas demand for the breed continuing to prosper. For contacts and information, head to:

We wish you all the best of weekends, with a particular well-wishing message to our Youth Development Programme participants ahead of the Senior Conference. We look forward to bringing you all the information from the event!

Highland Club AGM

Barrie Turner and Angela McGregor attended the Highland Club AGM on Thursday 22nd February in Tain.  It was a great night with a large attendance and many stories of the years activities were shared including the highly successful Northern Exposure event.  Congratulations to the Herd competition winners and thanks are extended for the wonderful hospitality.
