It’s been a busy store trade seeing over the last few weeks with auctions reporting a strong demand for Aberdeen-Angus store cattle. Here’s a few of the headlines. 

H&H St Boswells 

At St Boswells last Thursday Harrison and Hetherington held their annual sale of show and sale of native bred suckled calves, selling 1240 on the day. Taking on the judging duties were Messrs Purden, Stravenhouse, awarding the champion to Messrs Gray, Sunnycroft, with an Aberdeen-Angus bullock which topped the sale at £1800 (423.5p p/k). The T W Forrest trophy went to Messrs Ross, Wester Middleton, with a pen of strong bullocks, realising £1330.  

Also in the headlines for Aberdeen-Angus trading per head were Sunnycroft at £1360, £1360 for Earlside, £1350 for Stobswood, £1340 for Craigsford Mains, £13330 for Wester Middleton, £1310 for Earlside and £1300 for Currie Inn and Wedderlie. 

Meanwhile, trade for Aberdeen-Angus store heifers saw a top of £1300 for South Riccalton, £1250 from Meigle, £1205 for Trabrown, £1170 for Craigend, £1170 for Wedderlie, £1140 for Hutlerburn, £1130 for Lustruther, £1120 for Trabrown and £1110 for Currie Inn and Earlside. 

Thame Auction Mart 

Thame Auction Mart reported a strong Aberdeen-Angus offering at the end of last month with 581 cattle penned and sold to a top of £1300.00, with the majority of the yard filled with Aberdeen-Angus cross stores. 

Top price on the day was Messrs J H and P Empson, who waited to the second to last consignment to top the day with their homebred Aberdeen-Angus cross steers at £1300.00 and £1225.00. Heifers from the same farm sold to £1202.

Other headline prices included Messrs Bathgate and Mogford selling to a top of £1158.00, H A Fricker and Son to £1128.00, S H Beaman and Son £1108.00, Tom Burden to £1100.00 and Roy Best and Partners to £1085.00. Younger steers sold to a top of £1002 for a batch of 14-month old steers from Rob Lawrence. Bob Tofield sold his 11 month steers at £942.00, while Nick Wallington followed at £895.00.

Aberdeen-Angus cross heifers sold to a top of £1068.00 and £1005.00 from Roy Best and Partners, while 13-month old heifers from Bob Tofield sold at £880.00. 

C & D Auction Marts, Dumfries

Giles Lane and family of the Rosslayne herd, Raeburnhead, topped the sale at Dumfries this week at £1155 for a pen of five grass-fed bullock weighing 570kg. Aberdeen-Angus store cattle were in great demand and a pen of younger bullocks from Rosslayne averaging just 15 months and weighing it at 455kg made 218.00p/kg. Other headline Aberdeen-Angus headline lots included £1105, £1030 and £990 again from Raeburnhead, £1145 from Panlands, £1125 and £1075 from Kirkbride and £1060 from Kirkhill. Meanwhile, heifer trade saw a top call of £995 from Beechgrove and £990 from Whinnyhill.

ANM, Thainstone 

In the annual Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Society sponsored show and sale judged by Charles Smyth, Clifton Road, Aberdeen, the overall champion Aberdeen Angus was an 18-month old 582kg bullock from S Mainland, Skiddy, realising £1470 (253p per kg) to Emslie Partners, Little Barras, Fordoun. The reserve champion, shown by M D A Sinclair, How, Sanday, was a 16-month old 488kg bullock which sold for £1100 (225p per kg) purchased by L G Oliver, Haswell Moor Farm, Haswell.
