Shortly after that, the Massie family were back in action, selling Blelack Warbler J275 (lot 231) for 10,000gns to W Roddie, Stirling. This second prize bull is by Peter Pershore again and is out of a Blelack Blacksmith daughter Blelack Wistaria B463 and has a milk figure of +14, a TSI of +35 and a SRI of +48.

A good strong red bull from David Walker has just followed at 4500gns. This third prize bull, Galcantray Red Patamon J300 (lot 240) is an ET-bred bull and is by Red Ter-Ron Fully Loaded 540R and is out of Red PTTV Pride 3′97 and sold to A Lindsay and Co, Castle Douglas.

At the same money was another from the Gilmours, thsi time Belhaven Panorama J193 (lot 247). By Muirhall Double Edition E018, this one is out of the Rawburn Transformer daughter Muirhall Panelist E012 and has a milk figure of +12 and a SRI of +54, combined with a positive calving value. He sold to Longford Farms, Salisbury.

Next in good money was the second prize Idvies Kollar J431 (lot 203) from Alistair and Graeme Fraser. Another by the herd’s stock sire Rawburn Rommel E243, this one is out of the TLA Northern Samurai daughter Halbeath Kim B034. Not only has this bull got a particualry exciting pedigree he has a milk migure of +12, a TSI of +36 and a SRI of +42 and sold to Messrs Bruce, Logie.

And continuing a run of good money bulls, another from the Massie family has sold at 10,000gns. Blelack Prince Carl J237 (lot 208) is by Nightingale Defiance E264 and out of the Nightingale Ernie B133 daughter Blelack Princess Caroline E178. He sold with a milk figure of +15, a TSI of +34 and a SRI of +47 to J and W Arnott, Kelso, for their Haymount herd.

Netherallan Peter Pershore sold to Shadwell Estates

By Ankonian Elixir 100 and out of the young Dale Hogan 3Y daughter Nightingale Pride of Pershore S44, this bull has a terminal sire index of +45 and a self replacing index of +63.

Blelack have had three crops of calves from him and have retained the semen rights with semen available for sale. After his sale Neil Massie commented: “We consider his sons and daughters to be the best cattle the herd has produced to date. We have retained a top son from the 2009 crop.”

At Stirling in February 2010 the first seven sons to be sold by Peter Pershore averaged £11,850 including the intermediate and overall champion, the senior championship and all the group awards.

A yearling full sister to the overall champion won the junior class at this year`s Highland Show and the overall championship at this weeks Turriff Show. She is for sale at the Best of Blacks sale at St Boswells on the 25th September.

Richard Lancaster, the Director of Shadwell Estates said:  “In Peter Pershore we have purchased fantastic bloodlines which will no doubt compliment a strong Blelack influence currently within the Shadwell herd, as well as bringing tremendous figures into the herd.  We are incredibly excited about this bull’s future at Shadwell and look forward to seeing calves on the ground next year.”

The heifer, Belhaven Ruisseau H062, was paraded by Carol Rettie on behalf of owners, John and Teena Gilmour, of meat wholesalers, J Gilmour and Co, Penston, Macmerry, East Lothian, who were winning their third Fife Show championship.

She was reserve breed champion at Ayr earlier in the month and is a daughter of Vermilion Payweight J847 and in calf to the Blelack stock bull, Netherallan Peter Pershore E052, sire of Blelack Lord Hildalgo H972, champion at Stirling in February when sold for 25,000gns.

Inter-breed judge, John Elliot, owner of the Rawburn herd at Roxburgh Mains, Kelso, Roxburgh, had to call in an umpire to make the final placing because his son, John, manages the herd genetics for the Belhaven herd. But Limousin breeder, Alan Fotheringham, Westhall, Forgandenny, Perth, had no hesitation in giving the Aberdeen-Angus heifer the all-important slap on the rump.

Taking reserve in the Angus classes was Gordon Brooke, Linton Wold, Wintringham, Malton, Yorks, with his five year old cow, Lockerley Primrose E489, by Idvies Jester Eric A057. She was purchased by Mr Brooke from John Elliot, Jun, at Stirling in February for 14,000gns.

Balmoral champion Blelack Elijah

Due to the nature of the breeding, Elijah was tapped out champion by a independent referee judge John Young, Skerrington, who was under no hesitation to place him first in his class and overall champion, describing him as an exceptional bull, with good fleshing and locomotion.

With eight calves already on the ground and a further 30 females due to calve to him, Angela Armstrong said she was over the moon with his win at the show. “This is the first time I’ve shown at Balmoral, although my father was incredibly successful when he started showing in the 60’s. Husband and wife team Owen and Angela run 50 pedigree cows in Navan, Co Meath and plan to show Elijah at various shows on the circuit this summer.

Taking the reserve championship was relatively new breeder Trevor Wallace, Dromore, Co Down showing under Taughblane Aberdeen Angus. Croftburn Blackbird H331 is by TLA Northern Samurai and is out of Coldstream Blackbird.

Shown by Gary Hanna, Blackbird was bought from Bernard Mairs’ reduction sale for £9000 and was shown by Gary Hanna. She is due to calve to Hallington Endeavour in June and providing she calves well her next outing will be the Clogher Show.

Commenting on the standard of cattle forward, Mr Massie said: “It was a great show of Angus cattle and the top end were of a very high standard, but I would be slightly worried as to the condition some of the top end cattle were in for this time of year.”

The reserve champion which came through as the junior champion from Neil Wattie, Tonly Alonso H560 has gone at 10,000gns.

The senior champion, again from the Massies, Blelack Junior Eric H868, again by Peter Pershore out of a Blackstock daughter has gone at 18,000gns to Mr Dobsons, Shropshire for his Wall herd.

The reserve senior champion Wedderlie Tidy Baron H615 has followed at 13,000gns. This one is by Aynho Rossiter Eric and is out of the Big Dry Ranchers Choice daughter Tui Tidy Bee Y018 to Schivas Estates.

The reserve intermediate champion Cheeklaw Erick from David Lucas by Tweedside Jewgal Eric Z083 out of a Lord Horatio daughter has gone at 7500gns to Mr Vance.

And saving the best till last in terms of money spent, the reserve junior champion from Jim Logan, Galawater Bentley H495, by Rawburn Elysium F547 out of Galawater Bonita A262, has gone at 28,000gns to Mr Brooke, Malton, North Yorkshire, buyer of many Elliot females last night.

Taking reserve was a more than chuffed Neil Wattie at the lead of Tonley Alonso H560, the junior champion. This one is by Mosston Muir Edgar E107 and is out of Tonley Annie W18, a daughter of Samurai.

Overall it’s been a good show of Aberdeen-Angus bulls and many favourable comments have come to my attention regarding Albert’s judging with many saying he should be congratulated for doing a fantastic thorough job in good time. Time will of course tell if the right ones have taken the tickets, but overall we should be set for a good day’s trade tomorrow with plenty of buyers in attendance and a strong demand for good quality commercial bulls.

Taking the reserve was Wedderlie Tidy Baron H615, winner of class seven. By Aynho rossiter Eric B125, this March-born bull is out of Tui Tidy Bee Y018.
