Four month old calf takes interbreed at Clogher Valley
The National Show of Aberdeen-Angus cattle at Clogher Valley Show was a site to see, particulary as leading the field was a four month old heifer calf from Tom Reynolds, Co Leitram, who took the eye of judge William McLaren who tapped it out as overall champion.
This stunning and incredibly stylish heifer is by Knockdrinan Precise G398 out of Knockadrinan Bell A190 and was out on her just her second show outing of the year where on a previous day out she won the provincial cup at Longford Show. Today was a complete shock and delight for owner Tom who has been showing since 1954 and has won Carrick on Shannon some 14 times.
After tapping out his champion William McLaren said: “This was a cracking champion, she has the makings of a great heifer and cow and is incredibly stylish and caught my eye from the minute she stepped in to the ring. Overall the standard of the females at the show was outstanding. My champion was an easy winner with a great top line, carcass potential and femininity.”

Going one stage further, the heifer then took the overall interbreed champion spot under judge and Limousin breeder Harry Emslie, Peterhead, Aberdeen. She beat off stiff competition from a two year old Charolais heifer who stood reserve, as well as champions from the Hereford, Belgian Blue, Limousin, Simmental and Saler section winners.
Harry Emslie said: “This young calf oozed style and was an easy champion for me. She is an incredibly correct calf with a wonderful future ahead of me.”
Taking reserve in the Aberdeen-Angus classes was James Porter, Lisburn, with his homebred April 2004 born Old Glenort Black Bianca. This one is by Haymount Wessurd out of Black Bianca of Gilkey. William described his reserve as: “A good working young cow with a cracking calf at foot. She has great lines and a superb udder and walks with great ease in the show ring.”

Hi Brian
Thanks for your comments – it was a fantastic show (all the more better for the weather staying kind – when i left it really did start to bucket down). It was a great result for the breed and a great show! Cheers!

Many thanks to all the exhibitors for putting on such a wonderful show of cattle, the top end of the classes would of competed well at any show in the U.K. Thanks also must go to Chrissie for getting these reports up on the web to keep everyone informed whats going on around the shows this season, it looks good and to get the first prize winners pictures on is a real bonus hopefully this will hapen at more shows.
As has been reported the calf I put champion just oozed style, she carried herself well on the move and with her good topline and muscle was a worthy winner.
My Reserve Champion was a lovely young cow nursing a really good calf, she was not a fit as most of the other older cattle at the show but this young cow was doing what an Angus female should do milk and make a great job of her calf and as a pair they were easy my Senior Champion over some bigger and fitter females who in my opinion needed to have a calf at there side or in the case of the two year old heifers at least be further in calf than they were.

Hi John Thanks for posting a comment – it certainly was a great day, the two heifers were class. You did a cracking job on that commercial – I realise I’ve not mentioned you in the copy so I’m going back to change that………
