Aberdeen-Angus steers stops Edinburgh traffic
Celebrating the opening of his aptly named butcher’s shop Well Hung and Tender on Thursday (27 Nov), beef producer Donald MacPherson stopped traffic in the centre of Edinburgh as he paraded a prize winning Aberdeen-Angus steer in front of his new shop in North Castle Street.
Mr MacPherson judged the steer, Fulton the Grapier, from Perth-based George and Aillen McFadzean, the day before at the Royal Highland Winter Fair and purchased him at the show’s sale for marketing through the shop.
Renowned for his Well Hung and Tender beef company, which has seen him and his wife Sarah trade at local farmers markets as well as drive sales through a successful internet sales site www.wellhungandtender.co.uk , the family have now branched out in to the butcher’s trade to capitalise on a wider consumer audience.
“Opening the shop was the next logical step for us. Many of our customers don’t have the time to shop between 9am and 2pm on a Saturday at a farmers market, so opening for six days a week will capture a wider audience.”

Well Hung and Tender Shopfront
The Well Hung and Tender brand is renowned for its quality, award-winning beef which has been recognised by the likes of food critic Tom Parker Bowles. The shop will continue to stock some of the highest quality meat from the MacPherson’s own farm at Berwick-upon-Tweed, as well as neighbouring farmers who are using bulls bred in Mr MacPherson’s pedigree herd.
“These Aberdeen-Angus sired cattle are grass fed, finish to a high standard and are of an incredibly docile nature which has a positive effect on the overall quality of the carcass.
