In a week that has already seen a shipment of Aberdeen-Angus females to Estonia, Shropshire-based breeder Bob Lane of the Penguin herd has today sent a shipment of three in-calf heifers and two in-calf cows, along with a stock bull, out to Holland.

Buyers of the females were Mr and Mrs C H de’ Wilde who are establishing a new herd of Angus cattle to replace their previous herd of Belgian Blue cattle which have since been dispersed. The couple already run a commercial Angus operation and are well used to the merits of the breed.

Along with that shipment, Anneke and Gerrit Vervoorn have purchased a Penguin-bred bull by the herd’s stock bull Haymount Wurz F676. This bull is an addition to females that were originally purchased and exported from the Penguin herd in 2008.

A batch of heifers have been sold to Estonia in the latest export deal for the Aberdeen-Angus breed.

A batch of heifers have been sold to Estonia in the latest export deal for the Aberdeen-Angus breed.

The latest consignment, which totals 46 head includes 35 heifers which have been bought by one of the world’s leading professional sumo wrestlers is the latest recruit to the ranks of Aberdeen-Angus breeders.

Estonian, Kaido Hoovelson – who wrestles under the name of Baruto and is currently the number two sumo wrestler in the world – has purchased 35 yearling heifers as the foundation stock for an Aberdeen-Angus herd on his farm in Estonia.

The heifers have been purchased from the Rosemount herd of Alex and Wendy Sanger at Prettycur, Montrose, Angus, and are due to be shipped to Estonia later this month.

Alongside this group are a batch of 10 heifers and a bull which are heading to established Estonian Aberdeen-Angus breeders Meelis and Piret Marmor of Aberdeen Top Genetics, whose 90-cow Marmorland herd, built up over the past six years on Scottish bloodlines, is now firmly established as the leading Aberdeen-Angus herd in Estonia.

“Kaido is a farm boy at heart and has opted for Aberdeen-Angus after considering several other breeds,” said Mr Marmor, who is advising Mr Hoovelson on his new venture. “The Aberdeen-Angus breed is the most popular breed in Estonia with strong local demand as well as a thriving export trade to countries such as Romania, Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus and Latvia.”

Mr Marmor has sold 15 bulls for breeding over the past year and another to Mr Hoovelson for his new herd. There is also a strong demand from Turkey for weaned Aberdeen-Angus bull calves for finishing as bull beef.

The Netherton Angus herd of Messrs W and D McLaren, Aucheterarder, Perthshire, are pleased to announce the private export sale of 25 embryos to Luxembourg through CONVIS, on behalf of Alain Molitor.

Mr Molitor runs a purebred Limousin commercial herd producing calves to be finished for the CONVIS beef brand. Due to part of his land now being used extensively, for which he gets special subsidies from the Department of the Environment, he has decided to run Aberdeen-Angus.

Reports from CONVIS say many breeders are already having great success with Aberdeen-Angus cattle in Luxembourg and there are now some 25 Angus herds with herd size ranging from 10 to 150 cows.

CONVIS, which is responsible for the maintenance of cattle herd books, performance registration and genetic evaluation and has its own beef brand, purchased embryos from Netherton to establish a herd with alternative bloodlines and higher performance figures.

Included in the shipment are embryos from some of the breed’s leading females with eight embryos from Netherton Fleur G413 who was Winter National Cow Champion last year and has been sold recently for £25,000 to Saville Angus and is by the Ballmachie and Netherton stock bull Netherton Mr Brazilian E377 and seven embryos from Netherton Annie H474, the top performance cow in the Netherton herd by the Genus bull Netherton Rader J527.

Netherton Fleur G413

The remainder are sired by the Canadian bull HF El Tigre 28U and are out of Netherton Rachel G449, a top daughter of The Moss Mr Eshton D409 and Netherton Beauty J533, a maternal sister to Netherton Big Edition H460.

Speaking about the sale, William McLaren Jnr said: “These embryos have been selected to produce easy calving progeny that will mature into easy fleshed and good maternal cattle capable of suiting their new environment in Luxemburg. We are pleased to be working with CONVIS with this project and look forward to seeing how the progeny perform.”

Two leading Aberdeenshire herds battled it out for the top honours at the 13th Black Beauty Bonanza show of Aberdeen-Angus calves and yearlings on Saturday at Thainstone Centre, Inverurie.

This year’s show, organised by the North East Aberdeen-Angus Club with Sellars Agriculture of Oldmeldrum as main sponsor, attracted a record entry of 128 cattle from 27 herds from as far north as Orkney competing for £3500 in prize money.

The judge, Angus Stovold, owner of the old-established Rosemead herd in Surrey and vice-president of the Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Society, praised the quality of the cattle throughout the show which he described as outstanding.

“The Black Beauty is recognised as the best Aberdeen-Angus calf show in the country and I was greatly impressed with the size, strength and fleshing of the cattle and the professional way they were presented,” said Mr Stovold. “The show was a credit to the breed and to all the exhibitors.”

After each picking up four first prize tickets in the 12 classes, the Deveron herd of Hamish and Margaret Sclater, Denhead of Dunlugas, Turriff, and the Auchincrieve herd of the McCombie family, Auchincrieve, Rothiemay, went head-to-head when it came to the heifer championships.

In the end, honours were evenly shared with the Sclater’s winning the heifer calf title and the McCombie’s walking away with the yearling heifer award. The Deveron herd trumped its championship success by taking reserve in both sections while Auchincrieve stood reserve to Scotia Homes chairman, Bill Bruce, Logie, Ellon, for the keenly contested bull calf championship.

Repeating her championship success at the Aberdeen-Angus calf show at the Royal Highland Winter Fair on Wednesday was the Sclater’s heifer calf, Deveron Elize L348, an eight month old daughter of the home-bred Deveron Jackson Eric J283.

The sire was bull calf champion at the Black Beauty two years ago and the first Aberdeen-Angus to be sold at auction with a self replacing index (SRI) of over 60 when sold at Stirling in February for 5000gns. His daughter – one of only two calves sired by him in the Deveron herd – is being retained in the 60-strong herd and is destined for next year’s Royal Highland Show.

Mr and Mrs Sclater also stood reserve for the heifer calf award with the 10 month old, Deveron Lady L339, and the reserve yearling heifer award with the 19 month old, Deveron Proud Imogen K320, a first prize winner as a calf last year. Both were sired by the high performance bull, Blackhaugh Easy Papa G733.

Topping the yearling heifer class was an exceptionally well-grown 20 month old heifer, Auchincrieve Jessie Erica K303, shown by Charles McCombie and his two sons, Charles and Ben. The heifer was first in her class at Banchory Show during the summer and is a daughter of the 7000gns Perth sale purchase, Tonley Esquire F400, bred by Sellars Agriculture managing director, Neil Wattie, Mains of Tonley, Alford.

The McCombie’s reserve bull calf champion was the January-born Auchincrieve Emmerson L364, an AI son of Blelack Prince Consort A286, formerly a herd sire in the Glenbervie and Rosemount herds.

This calf was pipped at the post for the top award by Mr Bruce’s seven month old, Logie Politician L137, a much admired son of Blelack Lord Hildago H972, supreme champion at the Stirling sale in February, 2010, when purchased for the Logie herd for the top price of 25,000gns.

Winner of the yearling bull championship was the massive 19 month old Blelack Equity K452, by the 10,000gns Oakchurch Dominator G035, from Neil and Graeme Massie, Blelack, Dinnet, Aboyne.

Both the champion and reserve will be heading for the spring bull sales at Stirling in February.
