Registrations and DNA Testing

06.09.2023

Male registrations

In order to reduce the cost of DNA testing, the Society will no longer be testing all male animals upon registration. Instead, the Society will be emailing a list to breeders of animals eligible for DNA testing. These emails will be sent over the course of the next few days, please keep an eye on your inbox and junk folder.

DNA tissue vials should continue to be sent to the office as soon as possible after calving to maximise the potential of generating a DNA result from the sample.

Animals marked as INCOMPLETE will still be visible in the herd book. However, they will not receive a pedigree certificate until they are DNA verified and all balances are settled.

Breeders can opt to have males tested at any point in their life, from registration onward. However, once they are older than 14 months at testing, the breeder will be liable for the cost of testing.

Should you have any queries on this, please do not hesitate to contact the office.

Female Registrations

In order to reduce issues in later life, females should be DNA tested before the point of first calving. The Society will be emailing a list to breeders of animals eligible for DNA testing. These emails will be sent over the course of the next few days, please keep an eye on your inbox and junk folder.

Breeders can opt to have females tested at any point in their life, from registration onward. However, it is best if they are tested prior to going to the bull as this means that these are firstly the most likely females to introduce progeny to the herdbook and secondly, it means that DNA testing is complete before they calve down for the first time.

Should you have any queries on this, please do not hesitate to contact the office.
